Pure Funk is a compilation that captures the essence of funk, with a variety of top-selling, danceable selections that illustrate the dexterous musicianship and powerful arrangements indicative of the genre. Highlighted are landmark theme songs from 70's blaxploitation epics such as "Shaft," "Car Wash," and "Superfly," demonstrating how lush orchestrations entwine with the pulsing rhythms that define funk.

Legendary female vocalists such as Chaka Khan and Patti Labelle are captured in their prime with their respective glass-shattering performances on "Tell Me Something Good," and Labelle's "Lady Marmalade." Classics like the Parliament hit "Flashlight" and The Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces" feature some of the most distinctive bass work in funk. Platinum-selling songs such as the rousing "Jungle Boogie" from Kool and the Gang and the rousing "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas fill in the groove that flows from one rump-shaking song to the next.
