Product note

A fine addition to the slate of PUNK SINGLES COLLECTION anthologies, this best-of set is an excellent overview of an underrated band despite a couple of omissions. The breathtakingly cynical "The Adverts" is one of the great lost postpunk songs and their legendary self-description "One-Chord Wonders" is an indisputed classic. Guitarist/co-lead vocalist T.V. Smith quickly became a witty chronicler of suburban alienation reminiscent of X-Ray Spex's Poly Styrene, whose characteristic yawp was echoed somewhat by the group's other singer, bassist Gaye Advert. Speedy two-minute classics "Bored Teenagers," "Safety In Numbers" and the still-shocking "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" are all present here. In context, the later singles, made when the band was exploring a proto-Factory Records brand of desperate postpunk, sound more prophetic than they were given credit for at the time.
