Review

Uncut (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'PUNCH feels like a chamber recital from somewhere deep in Kentucky, set to mandolin, banjo, guitar and violin."
Dirty Linen (p.76) - "The disc's centerpiece is Thile's 40-minute-plus suite 'The Blind Leaving The Blind'....This extended piece features some dazzling ensemble playing and some bright, airy, neoclassical passages..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "PUNCH's speedy elegance and emotional depths counterbalance sheer instrumental craft and dazzle."
Paste (magazine) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Thile is the Hendrix of the mandolin....On PUNCH, the 26-year-old is swinging wildly at totems like marriage, God -- even the audience. And with a much more stately instrument."
The Word (magazine) (p.109) - "Thile plays with a sophisticiation far beyond his years, but his singing and lyrics are youthful..."

The Punch Brothers' PUNCH may well be the album on which bluegrass, after a long courtship, finally pops the question to progressive rock. Comprising an all-star band led by former Nickel Creek mandolin player Chris Thile and well-known acoustic guitarist Chris Eldridge, the Punch Brothers essay four brief, crisp pieces of traditional-style bluegrass on their debut album. The heart of PUNCH, however, is the four-movement suite "The Blind Leading the Blind," an extended composition that drifts from languid, jazzy mood music to Aaron Copland-like classical Americana to full-on ripping bluegrass and back in the course of its 42 minutes.
