Product note

Named after the Egyptian god of the sun, Amon Duul began as a many-headed political art commune that often provided the music at student demonstrations in Munich in the late 1960s. Eventually, the structurally minded members grew fed up with the collective's primitivist stance and formed Amon Duul II, a proggier animal altogether, and left the noisemaking crazies behind. With at least one record, the gloriously whacked PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND, the remaining members proved their own mettle in the area of period excess.
All PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND's tracks are culled from one long jam session recorded in 1968. Sounding as though anyone could waltz into the studio and join the band by strumming a guitar, thumping a tom, or chanting into a microphone, the album captures the celebratory roar of amateur music in a liberated era. But with pastiche editing, extreme stereo panning, and phasers aplenty, the mixing actually shapes the clatter into a gripping, if dated, piece of experimental music. While the session's who-needs-a-chord-change vibe probably had more to do with abilities than conscious choice, "staying on the one" became the calling card of all Krautrock bands that followed. PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND is not the easiest listen, but it remains a daring and rewarding curio for fans of both psych and Krautrock.

Title Note

In the decades since their first appearance in 1968, a popular urban legend surrounding the German experimental collective Amon Duul has held that the anarchistic kraut-rock pioneers rolled the tape on a single 24-hour acid-fueled spontaneous collective improvisation, and then all their albums were edited out of that marathon session. Good story, but it's not true. However, listening to their freeform 1969 debut, PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND, makes it clear why so many people thought it was. These six lengthy songs feature wordless moans and chants, thrashing detuned guitars, clunky rhythms most aptly described as "primitive," and all manner of psychedelic weirdness. Amon Duul, and their more overtly musical offshoot Amon Duul II ,would create more accessible albums later (particularly PARADIESWARTS DUUL and YETI), but PSYCHEDELIC UNDERGROUND is their most out-there work.
