Title Note

The synergistic fallout from his two collaborations with Steve Roach, along with Rich's own particularly unique vision, has resulted in Rich's most dynamic and expressive recording yet. The music on PROPAGATION, as reinforced in the liner notes, literally teems with furtive life. Atop a panoply of blossoming landscapes, Rich constructs dense mosaics of rhythms and environments via interlocking traditional percussives, found sounds, flutes, and rolling waves of electronics.

PROPAGATION envelopes the listener within unfolding, mysterious vistas ("Luminous Horizon"), cavernous, supernatural atmospheres of arcing whistles and talking drums ("Lifeblood"), and, on "Animus," the hypnotic rites of tribesmen preening before their idol. Rich has broadened the sometimes-monochromatic tones of his music, returning to the organic universe he populated on RAINFOREST as opposed to the rigidly structured harmonies of GAUDI. The album Includes contributions from Forrest Fang, who provides some haunting violin to the Asiatic life-pulse of "Guilin," and from Lisa Moskow, whose sarod pierces the cosmic expanse of "Whispers of Eden." PROPAGATION is easily one of Rich's finest works.
