Review

Option (3-4/96, p.123) - "...a reminder of the impact that electronic dance music had on both industrial and new wave..."
Melody Maker (2/17/96, p.35) - "...Skinny Puppy's final studio album and...their best....breathtaking stabs of viciously distorted guitar battle to bury that portentious nasal rap all the while backed by those unmatchably sweet synth themes....And the it all stops, drifts inexorably into the realm of The Song..."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "[T]he most poignant, elegiac and human album of their career..."

Title Note

THE PROCESS is Skinny Puppy's final studio album. D.R. Goettel died on August 23, 1995, shortly after it was completed.

Skinny Puppy: Nivek Ogre, Cevin Key, D.R. Goettel.

Additional personnel: Martyn Atkins (vocals); Pat Sprawl, Rave, Troll (guitar); Pepperdine (viola, cello); Philth (programming); Lorne Bouquet (background vocals).

Recorded at Subconscious Studios, Vancouver, Canada; Shangri-La Studios, California; Soundhouse, Seattle, Washington between November 1993 and May 1995.

One of the resolutely uncommercial band's most accessible collections, THE PROCESS was released after the drug-related death of one of its most creative members, the electronics wizard Dwayne Goettel. Goettel's cutting-edge sound collages bookend the album on the opening "Jahya" and the stunning finale "Cellar Heat," the latter perhaps a fitting swan song. "Hardest Head" is breakneck industrial dance music, "Blue Serge" is driven by a compelling bass line, and "Amnesia" is a stately procession through waves of static that at times sounds almost Brian Eno-esque.
