Review

Spin (1/00, pp.128-9) - 9 out of 10 - "...no longer a cross-cultural gesture. It's a musical style....whose sonic identity is strong and distinct."
Q (1/00, p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...mixing samples, humming bassline and ringing timbales. It's this happy bonding of melodic froth and dangerous rumble that makes PRIZE so aptly titled."
Alternative Press (1/00, p.99) - 5 out of 5 - "...moves effortlessly from ragged horn ensembles to dreamy strings, and balances his scrabbly noise guitar with mellow crooning and romantic solo piano. PRIZE is a heady mix, and all the better for not being simplistically confrontational..."
The Wire (1/00, p.67) - Included in Wire Magazine's "50 Records Of The Year ['99]"
The Wire (11/99, p.52) - "...lusciously carnivalesque. This is a real street music....PRIZE's lytics are as haunting as Gil Evans glissando; its sonics as precision tooled as any sonnet....Prize [it] like you should."
CMJ (10/18/99, p.3) - "...nearly flawless....employing an even broader range of instruments and production techniques....His frail tenor lends these graceful songs the air of sensuality that is essential to the bossa nova tradition."
Down Beat (2/00, p.60) - 4 out of 5 - "...Smart, oblique, literate songs with a post-'Blade Runner' cinematic flair....unfailingly up-to-date...more edge than its predecessors..."
Mojo (Publisher) (12/99, p.120) - "...oscillates between North and South Americas....his unforced style and fragmented, poetic lyrics bring home the allusive oddity of much Brazilian music....a fine cross-cultural fornication..."

If listeners want to hear 100% authentic Brazilian music, they have plenty of alternatives besides downtown guitarist/singer/songwriter Arto Lindsay, but they'd miss the eclectic, scrapbook approach that Lindsay--a native Brazilian but musical polyglot--relishes. On this 1999 release, which topped many critics' annual best-of lists, the mood is laidback, sultry, but always playful, with enough oddball numbers ("Ondina," "PRefeelings") to satisfy fans of Lindsay's no-wave days.
