Review

Q (9/94, p.131) - 3 Stars - Good - "...more Velvets-influenced and much better - an irresistably moody, panicky, melodic garage music..."

This disc contains both the NEW WAVE HOT DOGS and PRESIDENT YO LA TENGO albums as well as the ASPARAGUS SONG single.

This release combines 1987's full-length HOT DOGS and the PRESIDENT EP (1989) for a comprehensive, 26-song collection that showcases the early YLT sound, which veers between caustic primitive rock and introspective acoustic numbers. While their songs are generally built around a solid core of guitar, bass and drums, the group creates a wide range of moods. Beginning with the narcotic drone of "Barnaby Hardly Working," the EP includes some fierce rock, the gentle, acoustic "Alyda" (with lovely harmonies by Georgia Hubley), and two versions of "The Evil That Men Do." One is terse and ominous, recalling the Shadows; the other a full-on 10-minute jam. For good measure they cover Bob Dylan's "I Threw It All Away."

NEW WAVE HOT DOG is a similarly eclectic set, ranging from the earnest "Did I Tell You?" to skronky rock ("House Fall Down"). They humorously interpolate lines from songs by America on "Lewis," and on their cover of Lou Reed's "It's Alright (The Way You Live)," Ira Kaplan pays homage to one of the group's major influences. Scattered throughout are gems like the low-key, twangy "3 Blocks from Groove Street" and "Serpentine," highlighted by Hubley's crisp, rock-solid drumming.
