Actually the brainchild of BARBARELLA comic book author Jean-Claude Forrest, Lio (in reality 18-year-old singer and actress Wanda Maria De Vasconcelos) predated the synthetic pop stars of the 21st century by two decades. Released in 1980, her debut album is likewise a futuristic-sounding electro-pop exercise with a sexy, decidedly French sensibility that, on cuts like her Euro-hit "La Banana Split," sometimes sounds like a predecessor to Kylie Minogue, and at other times like disco performed by chipmunks. Nevertheless, it has a sweetly eccentric period charm that has worn well over the decades.
