Title Note

2 LPs on 1 CD: PRECIOUS LORD (1982)/I'LL RISE AGAIN (1983).

Recorded at the Sound Emporium, Nashville, Tennessee and American Music Studio, Memphis, Tennesee.

PRECIOUS LORD In 1982, when PRECIOUS LORD was recorded, Al Green had turned away from the destructive forces he'd encountered in secular music and dedicated himself to the Full Gospel Tabernacle Ministries in Memphis. The resulting PRECIOUS LORD is a chronicle of a Memphis church performance.

This nine-song collection of time-honored Gospel staples includes "Rock of Ages," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," all recorded with a big Nashville sound that's rounded out by a full church choir, strings and horns. Highlights include a soaring, inspirational performance of "How Great Thou Art," and the rollicking, sermon-closing "Hallelujah (I Just Want To Praise The Lord)."

I'll RISE AGAIN One of Al Green's earlier Gospel efforts, I'LL RISE AGAIN finds the singer in a state of transition. Though there's some synth work, Green hadn't yet adopted the more electronically based production techniques of later '80s efforts like SOUL SURVIVOR, he was still moving away from the organic, Willie Mitchell-produced sound of his '70s Hi recordings. Consequently, much of the production here is by-the-book pop/R&B, with backing vocals, strings and keyboards serving mainly as additional colors, not elements of the groove. While Green's singing is uniformly excellent, there's an odd distance to the mix here, and it often sounds as if Green is singing from far away. Advocates of his spiritual leanings might say it's evocative of the higher plane to which he was constantly aspiring.
