Album Description

The classic metal revival of the late '90s -- often termed power metal -- consisted mostly of bands focused on the technical and operatic aspects of NWOBHM greats like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. It shouldn't be forgotten that many European '80s metal icons also incorporated straightforward rock & roll, and even subtle blues influences. Messiah's Kiss employs this rockin' sensibility to fine effect on the band's 2002 debut. The group doesn't feature the double kick rhythms and complicated guitar arrangements of Blind Guardian, but this record's throwback style will still please power metal fans. Tracks like "Blood, Sweat & Tears" have a nice Accept-esque ring to them. Other '80s metal heroes like Dio and Saxon are also referenced nicely. A promising debut, Prayer for the Dying should satisfy fans of metal in all its forms. ~ Vincent Jeffries
