Review

Rolling Stone (p.69) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[H]is open-armed commercialism mostly works: 'Na Na NaNa Na Na' turns a kid's chant into a catchy cash-flaunting song..."
Spin (p.86) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "New York hustler Jim Jones is, despite his own best efforts, effortlessly charming."
XXL (Magazine Publisher) (pp.101-102) - "With even more adventurous choices and evident spurts of maturity, Jim displays the chops to maintain his status as a compelling hip-hop figure."

Title Note

Never hailed as the strongest lyricist out of the Diplomats clique, Jim Jones has always made up for it with the weight of his street credibility and his distinct vocal presence that exudes restrained menace. On his fourth full-length LP (and first for Columbia), the self-proclaimed Harlem Capo shines, thanks in large part to inventive street-hop beats from a production team including Chink Santana, Supa Dave West, Triple-A, and Ron Browz. While many of Jones's concepts are recycled, as he muses on backstabbers ("Frienemies") and brags about his lavish lifestyle ("This is the Life," "Pop Champagne"), he still executes them well. PRAY IV REIGN is a rare hip-hop album in that the intro--which sees Jones taking in O.G. wisdom from a Harlem old-timer over a `70s soul-drenched beat by No I.D.--is by far the tightest track.

MORE ABOUT THIS TITLE

SOME HAVE KNOWN JIM JONES FOR YEARS as part of the legendary Dip-Set clique, once one of the most formidable groups in Hip Hop; some didn’t discover him until his ubiquitous anthem “Ballin’”; but however you know him, you’re about to discover a new side of Jim Jones with his Columbia debut Pray IV Reign. A biography set to music, Pray IV Reign takes you on a journey through Jim’s life; from his childhood in the streets of Harlem and his triumphs and close calls as a young hustler, to his fears and hopes when becoming a new father and his swagger and confidence as a trendsetter and influencer. “These weren’t all my musical ideas. This is like a painting; a mosaic that everybody played a part of,” Jim shares when talking about the collective efforts of his camp and great producers in making the album. “We all share the same vision: to win and to make incredible music. The [type of] music that we came up to, that taught us how to hustle, that made us want to do things that [weren’t] right, that inspired us to do good.” Music from Pray IV Reign has already been debuted to critics and fans through the unique forum of an off-Broadway production in Hip Hop Monologues: Inside the Life and Mind of Jim Jones, co-written by Jim. Essentially a narrative set to music from the album, the production transcended the traditional idea of a listening session and allowed the audience to truly experience Jim’s music. He’s also finished work on a documentary about his life and his career, This Is Jim Jones. While lightning has already stuck twice for Jim with a second red hot anthem, “Pop Champagne,” he’s not content with just making club hits. Jim is poised to transcend “Street” star status, and through Pray IV Reign fans will understand that he’s more than Dip-Set, he’s more than “Ballin’”, he’s more than most expect. “I’m going to shock a lot of people who don’t think I can make this type of music,” Jim admits. “I’ve been through a lot of hurt and I can feel people’s pain. I’m very genuine in my music, and if I’m not talking about real life and my lifestyle I can’t get a song done. People can see a little of themselves in me.”
