We all know someone who is wildly intelligent, even highly educated, but who
seems to lack ambition or the drive to succeed despite their intellectual
advantage – perhaps we even recognize this quality in ourselves. In his new work
of fictionalized non-fiction, The Power of Ten by Vis A. Liepkalns presents a
cohesive collection of stories that seek to examine the motivations of what he
terms “underachievers of superior intelligence.”
Dr. Myles Leonard is
conducting a study of underachievement at the University Neuropsychological
Research Center at Cedar Point on the Florida coast. His program is known as
UDISI (Under-achievement and Displacement of Individuals with Superior
Intelligence). When he assembles the nine participants for their first meeting,
Dr. Leonard explains the goal of the study, stating:
“You have all been
chosen for the program for your intelligence, education, talents, and abilities
and the fact that your upward mobility and advancement have not been, shall we
say, what would have been expected by peers and competitors in your chosen
fields. You are in that sense all definitive under-achievers. The purpose of the
UDISI program is to extract and understand the specific correlates and casual
factors involved in such under-achievement. Our techniques will involve group
dynamics, interpersonal interactions, mutual and leader-facilitated learning
processes.”
As it turns out, Dr. Leonard himself has chosen to lead the
group and serve as its 10th participant. The study’s subjects are unique and
colorful, hailing from a variety of backgrounds, including a PhD, a physician, a
carpenter, a single mother and a former minor-league baseball player. All of
them are extraordinary people with extraordinary stories.
After their
initial introductions, the group’s inhibitions lessen and relationships begin to
form on many levels. Dr. Leonard helps facilitate their interactions to create
“the power of ten in one.” Liepkalns, a talented writer, gives his characters
remarkable depth and emotional range. His narratives are often humorous – with a
