Rebound Records' Power Ballads contains a selection of ten hard rock love songs, nearly all of which date from the '80s, which of course was the golden age of the power ballad. If anyone ever doubted the veracity of that statement, they just need to listen to this disc, which is filled with such heavy hitters as Bad English's "When I See You Smile," Night Ranger's "Sister Christian," Damn Yankees' "High Enough," .38 Special's "Caught Up in You" (arguably not a power ballad), Mr. Big's "To Be with You," Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)," L.A. Guns' "Ballad of Jayne," and the granddaddy of 'em all, Nazareth's "Love Hurts." When all is said and done, Power Ballads is not definitive, but it is a pretty entertaining collection that is worth the time of any budget-minded power ballad fan. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
