Alice Russell Artist Snapshot:

A more grounded indie counterpart to Amy Winehouse, British soul singer Alice Russell specializes in creating retro-minded pop-savvy songs. With her smoky voice and passionate delivery, Russell sounds like a vocalist twice her age, easily evoking vintage Aretha Franklin. In addition to her solo work (most notably POT OF GOLD), Russell has worked with Quantic, Bah Samba, and Mr. Scruff, giving her an underground hip-hop cred that most of her better-known contemporaries lack. Russell also knows her way around a simmering cover tune, having taken on Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" and the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" (with Nostalgia 77).

Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "A slow tempo, organic instrumentation and lush strings combined with Russell's intense, declamatory tones results in a strikingly soulful makeover."

Title Note

British retro-soul singer Alice Russell creates a true homage to her favorite music on 2009's POT OF GOLD. Drawing inspiration from Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, and Chaka Khan, Russell is clearly a student of late-1960s soul and R&B, and the album remains faithful to that era not only via Russell's wailing vocal style but also in everything from the feel of the tunes, the punchy horn charts, the steady backbeat drumming, and so on. Rather than feeling derivative or cloying, though, POT OF GOLD comes across as genuine and pleasurable. This is due to the quality of the songs and production and, most of all, to Russell's powerhouse pipes.
