This is part of Angel's The Ravi Shankar Collection.
On PORTRAIT OF GENIUS, sitar legend Ravi Shankar teams up with jazz flautist Paul Horn to create a fusion of styles that essentially combines the virtuosity of Indian classical music with Indian folk melodies. Ravi Shankar is known for his extensive work in pure Indian classical music. However, for this anomalous 1964 recording, Shankar has adapted and abridged a number of folk melodies to fit his ensemble, which consists of himself, Horn, two tabla drummers, and four other performers who play various other indigenous Indian instruments.
Among the seven tracks heard here, "Gat Kirwani" and "Dhun" are the most compelling. On the former, Shankar's fast melodic flourishes are superbly executed, as is the complex call and response established between himself and tabla drummer Alla Rakha.
