Dirty Linen (p.71) - "Listening to Por Por is like taking a bouncy, bright, and clangy ride through the streets of Accra."
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.44) - "[A] fascinating collection....It's genuinely like no music you've ever heard before."
Composer: La Drivers Union Por Por Group.
Who knew that the squeeze-horns used by taxi (or "trotro" ) drivers in Ghana could also be put to such good musical use? When played en masse, with percussion and vocals, they almost sound like accordions, or at least they do on this delightful and unique 2007 field recording from Smithsonian Folkways. The surprisingly listenable album celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ghanan independence, and includes an informative 40-page booklet with photographs and some background history about the nation.
