Review

Spin (p.104) - "Nothing on POPSICLE sounds like it was made after 1978. Which means the album's a hoot at times - a cinnamon-scented throwback assembled from the factory remnants of Cheap Trick, Van Halen, and Raspberries..." - Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly (No. 840, p.89) - "...Diamond Nights gleefully plunder the sludgy sleaze-rock epoch that the Darkness and Electric Six preceded them in resurrecting...." - Grade: B

Title Note

This is an import version.

Riff-heavy rockers Diamond Nights are part of a wave of young mid-2000s bands that combine a love of vintage hard rock and heavy metal with an indie rock sensibility. The members of the band obviously grew up listening to a lot of AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and Def Leppard, with maybe a little thrash metal for muscle and a little Cheap Trick for an additional pop fix thrown in. Those influences are more than apparent on the band's 2005 debut POPSICLE.

Diamond Nights keep things fast, loud, and hard, but their headbanging ethos never gets too serious for its own good. In fact, POPSICLE is full of fun, tongue-in-cheek energy, and there is plenty of sexy slide (note the groove-punch of "Saturday Fantastic") that keeps metal's painfully earnest bombast and machismo from rearing its ugly head. Additional touches, like the retro-New Wave vibe of "That Girl's Attractive" or the T. Rex-esque jam "Snakey Ruth," for example, add to the fun.
