Boredoms Artist Snapshot:

Japanese experimental band Boredoms plays a spastic, utterly bizarre combination of free jazz, hardcore punk, experimental noise, and electronic music. One of the most challenging groups in music history, Boredoms briefly tasted the mainstream during the mid-'90s after being championed by bands like the Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth. Though later recordings saw a drift toward a more tribal/trance groove, Boredoms still sound like no other band on the planet.

Review

Uncut (p.122) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[They] are incorporating funk into the exuberant, increasingly musicianly chaos."
Melody Maker (2/12/94, p.41) - 8 - Excellent - "...A massive Manga comic for your stereo, this manages to thrill, shock and amuse every time the laser hits...."

Title Note

Boredoms: God Mom, Yoshi-Kawa (vocals); Yama-Motor (guitar, vocals); King Kazoo Eye (kazoo); Hyla (bass, vocals); Yoshimmy P-We, Atari (drums, vocals).

Recorded at Sanwa Recording Studio, Osaka, Japan.

Easily one of the most bizarre ensembles to ever grace a major label, Japan's Boredoms debuted on Reprise Records in 1993, riding a strange cloud of buzz that was generated by Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys, and other outsider-loving bands. While fans of avant-garde saxophonist John Zorn had already heard Boredoms frontman Yamatsuka Eye's frenetic yelps on the former's Naked City recordings, POP TATARI introduced the US alternative-rock crowd to the wildly eclectic and chaotic "bore" aesthetic. Clearly nobody tried to rein in the Osaka-based collective's manic energy on this outing, since the record is filled with propulsive rhythms, metallic guitar freak-outs, and abrupt stylistic shifts. Even songs that seem to cling to a pop melody (see the chiming keyboard line of "Bore Now Bore") are gleefully sabotaged by sharp bursts of noise. Although most rock fans will meet POP TATARI with bewilderment, those open to highly adventurous and experimental music will be intrigued by this typically bold Boredoms album.
