Inspired by the Apollo moon landing, Washington Bellamy, an oddball teacher and frustrated husband, comes up with a wacky idea: he'll take his son on a roadtrip to Spires of the Moon National Park, a voyage with the same mileage between the earth to the moon. His neurotic wife must confront her own anxieties, especially an extreme case of agoraphobia, to follow them cross-country. While on the road, the family learns new things about each other, and before long, gains a newfound sense of love and respect.
