Title Note

The legendary New York pop songwriters Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman penned hits for artists as varied as Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Ray Charles, and LaVern Baker in their heyday. This collection reflects the duo's eclecticism, with Pomus's Latin-style rhythms on the Drifters' version of "Save the Last Dance for Me" juxtaposed with the white-bread pop of the U.K. singer Marty Wilde's "It's Been Nice" and the down-home blues of Ray Charles' desolate version of "Lonely Avenue." Barry Darvell's "Suspicion," Gary "U.S." Bonds' "Seven Day Weekend," and Dion & the Belmonts' "A Teenager in Love" all demonstrate Pomus and Shuman's mastery of the pop genre, and there's also the rarely heard original version of Presley's "His Latest Flame," sung by Del Shannon with a "Runaway"-style keyboard accompaniment.
