Review

"HEART functions...as a literary souvenir for Ramones die-hards.... [T]he pages and pages of nifty vintage photos of the Ramones will mean more to fans than the enthusiastically amateurish prose that accompanies them. Then again, given the book's subject, maybe it's appropriate that it's characterized by energy, passion, enthusiasm, and personality rather than technique or polish."

"[A] heartfelt memoir....For Ramonesters and punksters, a must."

Annotation

In this dishing autobiography, Vera Ramone King looks back on her life with Dee Dee Ramone, founding member and bassist of the Ramones, and the one credited with coming up with the name that would conclude all the band members' stage names and become synonymous with hard and fast punk-rock living. Despite his joyfully simple and brashly straight-ahead lyrics (songs like "53rd & 3rd" and "Rockaway Beach," which both feature the prototypical Dee Dee count-in come to mind), Douglas Colvin, as his parents named him, was a very complex man. He struggled with addiction his entire adult life, perhaps using narcotics as a form of self-medicating for his very real psychological disorders. He could be kind and loving, but also abusive. Without dwelling on the negative, Vera doesn't shy away from these and other problems she faced living with Dee Dee, and while Dee Dee's story ended on a sadly classic rock-&-roll note, Vera's story, as it comes through in POISONED HEART, is the positive story of a woman who lives her life fully, loved deeply, and has come a long way since her CBGB years.

Regarded as the fathers of punk, named one of Rolling Stone's Top 50 Bands of All Time, The Ramones are nothing short of legendary. Setting the U.S. music scene on fire in the 1970s and '80s, The Ramones were raw, tragic, and violentespecially the band's lead personality, Dee Dee. In POISONED HEART, Vera Ramone King pays tribute to her late husband, revealing what it was like to live with and love a heroin addict and the genius behind The Ramones. For true fans, groupies, and music-lovers everywhere, POISONED HEART is destined to become as much a classic as the man himself.
