This is a snapshot of a pop moment at the dawn of the 21st century disguised as a Christmas album, and a darn good one at that. Britney Spears on "My Only Wish (This Year)" turns in the most sexually charged performance of a seasonal song since Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby," while Monica personifies MOR R&B balladry with "My Grown Up Christmas List." Christina Aguilera is a youthful stand-in for Patti LaBelle, seizing the helpless melody of "Silent Night" by the throat, thrashing it about the head, and finally throwing it to the floor, flailing and gasping for breath (right on, Christina!).

Then there's Santana with his flamenco-tinged "Posada," checking in as designated hitter for the Latin pop explosion. Alt-Christian rockers Jars Of Clay are an apt choice for the obligatory "Little Drummer Boy," and somebody deserves enormous credit for including Steps' poppy re-make of Slade's glam rock classic "Merry Christmas Everybody." Dave Matthews' folkish, self-penned "Christmas Song" won't supplant Mel Torme's standard of the same name, but its appearance here is welcome nonetheless, as is TLC's hip-hop take on "Sleighride."
