Review

Spin (p.58) - Ranked #26 in Spin's "The 40 Best Albums of 2006" -- "[M]oving from Harley backfires to ambient quasar emissions to obscure punk seven-inches on eBay."
The Wire (p.68) - "PINK displays the full gamut of Boris's musical might, including brittle black psychedelia, cat scratch punk rock, garage Grunge and Ghost-like temple drone."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[T]he emphasis is on superfuzzed-out punk....The drone prevails on 'Blackout', while psychedelia adds another colour to 'Pink'."

Title Note

Boris (Metal): Takeshi (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Wata (guitar, sound effects); Atsuo (drums).

Recording information: 2006.

Since their inception, Japanese metal trio Boris (aptly named after a Melvins song) have maintained a relatively underground status, trafficking in brutal stoner rock; mood-altering Pink Floyd-style experiments in ambient electric psychedelia; and collaborations with avant-garde artists like Merzbow and Keiji Haino. On PINK, their highest-profile release to date, the group tries its hand at all three, and largely succeeds. Playing with incredible force and a deft hand at tempo and mood changes, PINK is at once crushingly heavy ("Blackout"), relentlessly thrashing ("Nothing Special"), and incredibly tranquil ("My Machine"). And with a lead guitarist as adept as Wata (a rare female member in a band of this stature) and the pummeling, gong-smashing drummer Atsuo, it should be no surprise how well it all comes together.
