Stephen Malkmus Artist Snapshot:

As one of the principal members of the band Pavement, Stephen Malkmus helped define the sound of 1990s American indie-rock. While his solo work retains Pavement's abstract literary sensibility, Malkmus indulges a broader musical palette when on his own, evoking everything from British folk and '70s prog to psychedelia and blazing guitar-rock. With the assistance of his backing band, the Jicks, Malkmus has established himself as one of the most respected guitar players in underground rock. In 2007, drummer Janet Weiss, formerly of Sleater-Kinney, became a full-time Jick.

Review

Spin (4/03, p.104) - "...The album is best when Malkmus trusts his God-given gift for easy tunes and wiseacre wit, unfolding generous, often hilarious tales of middle-class romance..." - Grade: A
Entertainment Weekly (3/21/03, p.109) - "...PIG LIB accomplishes what no punk-schooled fan would think possible: It makes prog-rock cool..." - Rating: A-
The Wire (3/03, p.68) - "...[The album] follows the cleaner, roomier sound of its predecessor.....There's also an added folk-rock influence and some bold guitar histrionics..."
CMJ (03/24/03, p.8) - "...Progressive arrangements and a quick dip or two into the jam pool propel Stephen Malkmus's songs to new heights..."
Mojo (Publisher) (4/03, p.91) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Compelling....He creates remarkably chatty, warm music - guitar that twitches and tuts, sighs and murmurs, even delivers a punchline....PIG LIB is full of as many little mysteries as it is revelations..."

Title Note

Initial pressings of PIG LIB included a bonus CD including five tracks.

Personnel: Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Mike Clark (guitar, keyboards); Joanna Bolme (bass, background vocals); John Moen (drums, background vocals).

Principally recorded at Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington between May & August 2002.

For his second solo outing after leaving Pavement, Stephen Malkmus expands his musical horizons a bit from his 2001 solo debut, which basically sounded like an extension of his former band's sound. It's only naturally that Malkmus' work should bear some similarities with the output of his erstwhile group, since he played a major role in fashioning their style, and the non-sequitir lyricism and skewed, angular alt-rock that marked the Pavement style are still strongly in evidence. However, there are other elements at work on PIG LIB.

Mostly, it sounds like noted music geek Malkmus has been listening to esoteric '70s UK outfits like progressive blues-rockers the Groundhogs and folk-rock cult heroes Steeleye Span (or perhaps Fairport Convention). The knotty, stately guitar lines that twist their way around many of the songs and intertwine with the vocal melodies are redolent of the beard-rock world inhabited by folks like the aforementioned groups. The sound makes a nice fit for the former lo-fi king, providing a refreshing change of pace that's subtle enough not to seem drastic or crass, but substantial enough to suggest that Malkmus's musical growth was not stunted by the death of Pavement.
