Timo Maas Artist Snapshot:

Taking to a pair of decks at an early age, German DJ/producer Timo Maas got his first exposure to techno during the late-`80s rave era, moving quickly to become a firebrand for the German trance scene of the 1990s. Later, a residency at Hamburg's famed Tunnel club saw the development of his trademark DJ style along with some initial forays into production, both of which won him acclaim with the international dance music fraternity. A prolific re-mixer more than a solo artist, he has continued to put his hard-hitting, funk-influenced touch on countless tracks. When the trance style slumped with the new millennium, Maas continued fruitful associations with operatives in the progressive house and R&B realms, even scoring a guest spot for rapper Kelis on his second artist album, PICTURES (2005).

Review

Entertainment Weekly (No. 840, p.89) - "...Maas mixes house and down-tempo funk with his usual cinematic panache...." - Grade: B

Title Note

Personnel include: Timo Maas (vocals); Neneh Cherry, Rodney P., Brian Molko (vocals); Martin Buttrich (guitar, keyboards, drums); G-String (strings); Jo Kate Benson (background vocals); Kelis.

Although German trance hero Timo Maas has released numerous records, this is only his second album of original compositions. Songs here range from ominous drones to upbeat dance-floor numbers to rock-tinged techno, with R&B singers Kelis and Neneh Cherry guesting on one song apiece, and Placebo vocalist Brian Molko appearing on three wildly different tracks. Though Maas's compilations are always engaging, PICTURES proves that his own recordings are just as fascinating.
