Review

"Nearly everyone in prison protests innocence, but Ronald Cotton was telling the truth....[I]t's extraordinary that Cotton emerged from prison at all. More stunning still was his willingness, upon exoneration by DNA evidence, to forgive the people who put him there....[E]ven the most cynical reader will be impressed with [his] resilience and grace."

"A rape victim and the man she falsely accused -- in good faith, but with horrendous consequences -- ...share a saga of injustice and redemption. 'Injustice' and 'redemption,' words appearing in the subtitle, are overused in book industry hype. But those words mean something special -- something unforgettable -- when describing this book."

Publisher's note

Jennifer Thompson was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment while she slept. She was able to escape, and eventually positively identified Ronald Cotton as her attacker. Ronald insisted that she was mistaken-- but Jennifer's positive identification was the compelling evidence that put him behind bars. After eleven years, Ronald was allowed to take a DNA test that proved his innocence. He was released, after serving more than a decade in prison for a crime he never committed. Two years later, Jennifer and Ronald met face to face-- and forged an unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives.

In their own words, Jennifer and Ronald unfold the harrowing details of their tragedy, and challenge our ideas of memory and judgment while demonstrating the profound nature of human grace and the healing power of forgiveness.

An account for which the authors received 2008's Soros Justice Media Fellowship traces the story of a rape survivor and the man she mistakenly identified as her attacker, describing the unlikely friendship they forged after DNA evidence proved his innocence and their shared subsequent advocacy for judicial reform.

Annotation

In 1984, Jennifer Thompson, a white college student, was raped by a black intruder in her apartment. She picked out Ronald Cotton from a line-up and "positively" identified him as her assailant. On the strength of her testimony, Cotton was sentenced to fifty years in prison, and a subsequent second charge against him increased his penalty to life. After eleven years in prison, Cotton was exonerated of all charges in 1995 by DNA evidence. A guilt-ridden Thompson eventually sought him out, and the two somehow forged a bond, teaming up to speak out against the glaring inadequacies of the legal system. This account of their story alternates between their individual experiences on opposite sides of the law, including the degrading personal invasions they each suffered in the initial stages of the investigation, and the deplorable delays and defects that are actually built into the processes of arrest and conviction. The concluding third of the book documents their improbable alliance as activists fighting to amend a system that failed them both miserably.
