Review

Q (9/95, p.114) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...one of the coolest new hip hop albums around....engaging insolence together with a clear-headed anger and a talent for knowing just when to turn to the theatrical are icing on a satisfying rich cake..."
Vibe (8/95, p.136) - "...Bushwick has gotten over on the force of his personality and his skill at self-invention. Those qualities ultimately carry him through on PHANTOM..."
The Source (7/95, p.67) - 3.5 Mics - Dope - "...PHANTOM OF THE RAPRA is an album that shouldn't be slept on....bizarreness is his trademark....superb production and a much improved delivery..."
Melody Maker (7/22/95, p.37) - Recommended - "...PHANTOM OF THE RAPRA is not going to blow up in your face, but its frontline journalism, and analogies with opera--the bourgeois man's music of violence, murder, incest and rape--and horror film imagery are likely to blow your mind instead..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Bushwick Bill, 3D, Menace Clan, Sherm (vocals).

Producers include: John Bido, Mike Dean, Mad, CJ, Freddie Young.

Recorded at Lil J's Studio, Houston, Texas.

Geto Boy Bushwick Bill's second solo effort, 1995's PHANTOM OF THE RAPRA, is as hardcore and gritty as anything released by his fulltime group. The album is chock full of street tales of various thugs and hustlers, customized by Bill's knack for injecting humor into the drama. While nothing especially new or different can be found on the album, its mix of violent and horror imagery makes it novel, and arguably a forebear of the "horrorcore" subgenre.
