The Tragically Hip Artist Snapshot:

This Canadian guitar rock band has proved massively popular in its native country, garnering numerous Juno awards, while earning comparisons to Green On Red and early R.E.M. further abroad, for their jangly, acoustic-electric aesthetic and penchant for hooks. The Tragically Hip originally formed in 1983 at Queen's University, and were signed quickly signed to MCA Records after a series of explosive live shows. The Ontario-based band achieved triple platinum status with their 1989 debut album, UP TO HERE, and were soon touring with the likes of Neil Young and the Who. In more recent years, they have signed to the smaller but respected Rounder imprint, Zoe Records, and have experimented with a leaner sound with more keyboards. Lead singer Gordon Downie has also published a book of poetry and released solo albums.

While their fellow Canadians can't get enough of these guys, who've been kicking around since 1983, releasing album after album of rootsy pop-rock, they never caught on stateside in the same way. That's not to say they didn't develop an avid cult following in the U.S. over the years, and that core group is joined by a new group of fans with the release of PHANTOM POWER, one of the band's most successful releases. Guest Steve Berlin (of Los Lobos fame) guest here, adding Yank credibility, but it's the songs themselves that make PHANTOM POWER work. From the elliptically titled "Bobcaygeon" to the slightly less elliptically titled "Emperor Penguin," Gordon Downie's emotive vocals and the band's textured-but-driving sound makes this one of their most fully realized works.
