PET GENIUS makes for a startling surprise in two ways: firstly, Stephen Brodsky's previous project, Cave-in, left a trail of destructive heaviness over the course of seven albums, and secondly, Brodsky turned back the clock to 1990 when Boston was the coolest city in indie rock. Cave-in fans should look elsewhere for metal redux, as Brodsky uses PET GENIUS to flex his muscles as a power pop tunesmith and psych guitar avatar, both to great success. Behind the lollipop phrasing and psych effects, Brodsky flashes his metal chops, giving newfound weight to tried and true McCartney-esque melodies. The results are a wholly original stew of Beatle-y psych and heaviness that pits Brodsky as the new-millennial answer to Ted Nugent.
