This live album by popular worship leader Richard Smallwood and his Vision choir starts out in a rather unexpected way. The full horn and string sections on hand are employed in an instrumental prelude that's more suggestive of European classical music than of down-home gospel. When Vision enters on "Anthem of Praise," their choral vocals sound more like a British early music ensemble than a soulful evocation of the gospel church. After this unusual beginning, though, Smallwood and his singers get down to the kind of soul-flavored grooves and hearty, emotive singing that are gospel music's stock in trade. They clearly feed of the energy of the live audience, and in turn they fuel that audience's fire with their own high-energy testifying. In between songs, Smallwood stirs up the audience like an old-school preacher, but when he launches into a tune, he's a smooth, solid entertainer as concerned with pulling off an effective vocal as with conveying his message. It's to his credit that PERSUADED finds him doing both so successfully.
