Title Note

A great roundup of Ben's best work. Yes, it's a hits collection, but one that even the most staunchly album-oriented listener will not be able to resist. Taking in mostly cuts from the '70s and early '80s, Personalidade finds Ben ranging wide and far in his mixed bag of samba and tropicalismo gems. Along with such well-known fare as "Mas Que Nada," "Pais Tropical," and "Oba, La Vem Ela," Ben shines on such folky cabaret treats as "Morre O Burro, Fica O Homem." Like his contemporary, Caetano Veloso, Ben's ability to meld folk samba, strings, Bahian percussion, and contemporary elements from funk and rock makes for heady, yet highly enjoyable listening. A must for all fans of modern Brazilian music and a fine first disc for the Ben newcomer. ~ Stephen Cook
