Elis Regina's untimely death in 1982 robbed Brazilian music of its greatest female singer. As demonstrated on PERSONALIDADE, Regina was that rare bird blessed with both a beautiful voice and a highly developed aesthetic sensibility. She's perhaps best known to casual onlookers for her collaborations with Jobim (particularly ELIS AND TOM's classic duet "Aguas De Marco," a sans-Jobim version of which is included here). In reality, that not-insignificant achievement is just the tip of the artistic iceberg.

Besides being the premier female interpreter of Jobim, Regina worked her vocal magic on sophisticated material by other Brazilian innovators; her takes on Ivan Lins, Joao Bosco, and Milton Nascimento are highlights of this winning collection. While Regina stopped short of tropicalismo's iconoclasm, her combination of supple, understated fluidity and exceptional vocal strength made her one of Brazil's most important musical figures, as amply demonstrated here.
