Review

Q (4/04, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Where once they clanged, Neubauten now purr, the pervading mood of restrained grandeur, leavened with itchy, almost pop touches..."
Magnet (pp.91-4) - "Neubauten has created a music that's as radically different - softer, slower, lovelier - from the sensuously curving SILENCE as that record was from Neubauten's clanging previous work."
CMJ (2/2/04, p.4) - "[A] reflective, quiet [by Neubauten standards] offering that relies on creating moods and waves of sound more than it does bashing you over the head with a ton of sheet metal."
Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[The highlight] is the aptly named, episodic 13-minute title track. Pared-down bass, guitar and percussion give it an irresistible momentum."

Title Note

Einsturzende Neubauten includes: BB (vocals, Hammond organ, clavichord); AH (bass).

Producers: Einsturzende Neubauten, Boris Wilsdorf.

Recorded at Saal 4 and at Tritonus Studio, Berlin, Germany.

A series of sustained reflections of the day-to-day world, PERPETUUM MOBILE finds Einstrzende Neubauten exploring the subtle power of ambient noise and textures. The group doesn't blaze radically new stylistic ground--gone are the days of bulldozers, jackhammers, and Blixa Bargeld's vocal freakouts, along with their accompanying moments of transcendence and catharsis. Nevertheless, the intensity, command of dynamics, and, yes, musicality at the heart of Einstrzende Neubauten's sound are on display throughout PERPETUUM MOBILE, a challenging but not self-consciously difficult album that, like all of the group's best work, rewards repeated listens.
