THE PERFECT GIFT displays a more heart-on-sleeve emotionality than other Race releases, due largely to singer Craig Klein's allowing his voice to stretch out--hitting high Jeff Buckley-like trills over some more ferocious than usual guitar chugging. "Bye Bye Hello" is downright screamy, but the band is oddly menacing even in their calmer stretches, like the echoing drone of "Hail to the Sheep."
