Album Description

Who exactly Darling Kandie is, or are, is not made very clear by the liner notes to this strange album, which do explain that the tracks it contains "are among the last works of William Tucker and "were recorded in 1998 and 1999 as rough demos for a collaborative project with Groovie Mann." The music itself sounds like a summit meeting between the Residents and J.G. "Foetus" Thirlwell -- imagine the smart-aleck irony of the former combined with the self-conscious abrasiveness of the latter, and you'll have a good idea of what to expect. And as a poet once said, "that is all ye know and all ye need to know." Everything here is rife with samples, many of them apparently taken from old horror and science-fiction movies, and the musical accompaniment falls generally within the industrial spectrum. All of that said, not much of this stuff is very interesting. "Cobra Kiss" combines nasal, declamatory vocals with campy horns and twangy guitar, and gets very old within about a minute, while the jackboot rhythms and mannered vocals of "Look at the Musik" sound like a low-rent version of late-'80s Ministry. The album's most intriguing song is the title track, a creepy and campy sample-fest . Overall, People Next Door offers a few cheap thrills, but not much more than that. ~ Rick Anderson
