Spirituality & Health (Vol. 7, No. 2, pp.68-9) - "Another voice that calls to the heavens, but from a different tradition..."
Compilation producer: James Marienthal
Joanne Shenandoah integrates traditional Iroquois music with a thoroughly modern point of view. This collection features the artist's haunting vocals and spiritual messages that are completely grounded in Native American tradition. Shenandoah often sings in her native tongue, as on "I Am Your Friend." At times, however, she blends in a New Age or pop flavor, such as the electronics and keyboards in "When Eyes Meet." It's a dual existence that could be confusing, but Shenandoah somehow marries the two elements seamlessly, suggesting that old and new are not as far apart as they might seem.
