Review

Spin (4/00, pp.192,194) - 7 out of 10 - "...Playing with trace elements of early '70s Kraut-rock....totally otherworldly....[this] is data-age playboy music - cleanly engineered swankadelica for any lazy sophisticate who fancies himself rolling like a rico suave."
Alternative Press (12/99, p.78) - 4 out of 5 - "...emerges as an impressive composer in his own right. Peace Orchestra retains the trademark downtempo sound of a [Kruder & Dorfmeister] production and expands it into a full-length of cinematic scope....carries the perfect tension of hot-buttered and cold-blunted soul."
The Wire (10/99, pp.54-5) - "...a superb collection of downbeat collages, which actually outstrips anything [Kruder & Dorfmeister] have done to date....a low-key red-eyed stoner's delight....Such an immaculate album deserves your full attention."
Muzik (11/99, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...positively reeks of drizzly cold war spy soundtracks and flickering neon-lit bordellos, as an air of tension hangs fog-like over the slow, simmering jazz doodlings....Disturbing and daring in equal parts."
CMJ (10/18/99, p.24) - "...demonstrates that Kruder works just as well in the one-man-band setting....His stellar retro-futuristic fusion results in space-age easy listening music that's never too soft or sedate."

Title Note

Peace Orchestra includes: Chilli Bukasa (vocals); Peter Kruder (various instruments).

Peace Orchestra is the solo project of Peter Kruder, better known as one half of Kruder & Dorfmeister, perhaps two of the finest producers in the trip-hop/downtempo/whatever arena. The world has been waiting patiently waiting for K & D's debut, content with the duo's amazing remix and DJ-mix discs. Until that day arrives, most of us should be just tickled by Kruder's individual contribution.

PEACE ORCHESTRA continues the K & D tradition, pirating samples, sounds, and ideas from the best unknown jazz and R&B records, adding instrumental touches, and re-emerging with a painstakingly well rendered synthesis of jazz funk. This is Euro-synth groove music that remains fresh and original. On the opening "The Man, Part One," Kruder tells a sordid-sounding tale with lazy horns and squiggly electronics. The more upbeat "Meister Petz" uses fudged analog smears and a sleazy rhythmic pulse to imagine a soundtrack for "Blade Runner" remade as a Bogie film. Like Fila Brazillia, Funki Porcini, and others of the same dank-nightclub ilk, Kruder understands the funky inner recesses of the groove. PEACE ORCHESTRA demonstrates how to motivate its hypnotic inertia.
