Title Note

Personnel: Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Tim Warfield (tenor saxophone); Anthony Wonsey (piano); Reuben Rogers (bass); Adonis Rose (drums).

Additional personnel: Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove (trumpet).

Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York on September 29 & 30, 1997 and January 6, 1998. Includes liner notes by Tony Green and Nicholas Payton.

Young trumpeter Nicholas Payton shows some obvious maturity on PAYTON"S PLACE, his third solo disc. Payton was always an improviser with a rare sense of style for his age, but his playing on this disc suggests a little extra seasoning had taken place over his first few years as a leader. Penning most of the tracks on this rather lengthy disc, Payton increases his range as a composer as well.

Surrounding himself with other "Young Lions" of the day (Tim Warfield, Anthony Wonsey, Reuben Rogers and Adonis Rose), Payton offers a fresh, vibrant sound from his ensemble while maintaining the post-bop aesthetic that is the vogue of his ilk. The guest stars, however, are some very accomplished jazzmen, indeed. In a stunning performance, Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargove join Payton on "The Three Trumpeteers," a rollicking affair that will have you gasping at the display of dexterity. Saxophonist Joshua Redman also drops by on the hard swinging "A Touch Of Silver," an obvious tribute to the piano master of the same name. In all, this is a significant plateau in Payton's career.
