Annotation

Elias Canetti, who won the Nobel Prize in 1994, was a Bulgarian-born writer who, fleeing the Nazis, moved to England with his wife in 1939, when he was 34. There he became involved with an intellectual social set that included T.S. Eliot, William Empson, Arthur Waley, and of course Iris Murdoch, with whom Canetti had a tumultuous three-year affair. (Murdoch immortalized him in several of her novels as a charismatic but egomaniacal manipulator of people.) Canetti's candid appraisals of the literary scene; his sharp portraits of friends, associates, and mistresses; and his mixed feelings toward the English in general (as he praises their courage during the blitz but finds them unfeeling and insensitive), make for entertaining and illuminating reading.
