Piano Magic Artist Snapshot:

An ever-shifting U.K. ensemble commandeered by singer/guitarist Glen Johnson, Piano Magic is a restless and eclectic act, consistent only in its devotion to a dark, melancholy aesthetic. Actively recording since the mid-1990s, the collective has shifted labels numerous times, with stints at 4AD and Darla, and its sound has followed suit, often moving from post-rock to ambient to dream-pop or any combination thereof. Although Piano Magic's profile lowered after it departed 4AD, its output barely slowed, with Johnson issuing fine albums such as THE TROUBLED SLEEP OF PIANO MAGIC (2003) and PART MONSTER ('07).

Title Note

Piano Magic: Glen Johnson, Frank Alba (guitars); Cedric Pin (Fender Rhodes piano); Jerome Tcherneyan, Alasdair Steer (bass guitar).

Additional personnel: Simon Rivers, Angele David-Guillou (vocals); Terry Edwards (trumpet); Guy Fixsen (double bass).

The gentle title track of Piano Magic's seventh studio album captures everything that's special about Glen Johnson and his various cohorts: a quietly fingerpicked guitar, a repetitive, hushed and completely infectious backing vocal, and Johnson's no-frills voice intoning intelligent and sensitive lyrics.
