With an album title that steals from a Vladimir Nabokov novel, it's perhaps not surprising that much of Fol Chen's debut remains obscure, even if the music itself can be irresistibly poppy. "The Wedding Cake" epitomizes JOHN SHADE's appealing duality. Candy-coated keyboard melodies, oohs/aahs, and retro-funk guitar glide beneath a rigid drum-machine beat and mysterious lyrics. And while "Winter, That's All" is as harsh an electro rave-up as its name would suggest, "You And Your Sister In Jericho" is downright pastoral, guided along by the warmest of horn arrangements. FORTUNE is indeed bountiful, as long as you like your music both intimate and aloof.
