Title Note

PARIS BLUES is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files.

Original score composed by Duke Ellington.

Includes liner notes by Patrick McGilligan.

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

Although not as well known as his score for Preminger's ANATOMY OF A MURDER, Duke Ellington's masterful music for the soundtrack to the film PARIS BLUES is one of the best marriages of jazz and film. Set in the City of Lights, the film portrays two American jazz musicians (Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier) and their love interests (Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carroll). As an expression of true artistic freedom, Ellington's music fits perfectly with the film's spirit, energy and emotional resonance. Throw in an appearance by Louis Armstrong and you have all the ingredients for a jazz masterpiece of both film and music.

Many Ellington standards are included here, like Duke's signature "Take The 'A' Train" and "Mood Indigo," both re-recorded especially for the soundtrack. Newly composed works for the film include the joyfully swinging "Battle Royal," Armstrong's feature "Wild Man Moore" and the classic Ellington sound of "Paris Stairs." Interspersed throughout the disc are snippets of dialogue from the movie, giving the listener the feel of the music's direct relation to the story. Finally, Ellington's dramatic title track is a powerful statement on the nature of art, freedom and and the ever-present swing.
