Though occasionally tagged as a metal band due to its propensity for hard-charging rhythms and driving guitars, Dredg ultimately has more in common with the soaring, dramatic rock of U2, Radiohead, and even '90s--era Rush. THE PARIAH, THE PARROT, THE DELUSION is one of the California group's most progressive works, delivering layered, complex explorations of meter, harmony, and sound on every track. From the dancey, reggae-tinged "Gathering Pebbles," to the `80s-style energetic sophisto-pop of "I Don't Know" the record defies categorization. Equally compelling are the several instrumental musical interludes sprinkled throughout, which give the record the feel of a conceptual piece.
