Annotation

Mick Wall's memoir, PARANOID, which follows the British rock writer and occasional PR consultant through the depths of his long-term heroin addiction, is a gloves-off exposé of the seamier side of the music business on both sides of the Atlantic, and of the adroit but sleazy strategies and short cuts Wall adopted in writing the stories that paid for his drugs. Rock aristocrats Stevie Nicks, Frank Zappa, and Led Zeppelin are just some of the characters that crop up throughout a story that could be a contemporary version of the movie THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS. The book's title is justified by the frequent appearance of the Ronnie James Dio-era Black Sabbath and its deposed front man Ozzie Osborne, whom Wall expertly conjures in all their inelegantly wasted glory. (His protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, Wall's writing is remarkably good throughout.) Despite the author's dim grasp of journalistic ethics, rock & roll fortune favors the wicked: Wall eventually gets his own European satellite TV show, and ends up a slightly cleaner and considerably more successful man in perhaps his natural milieu--Los Angeles, California.

Short Desription

Mick Wall was a teenage Black Sabbath fan who, leaving school with no qualifications, somehow found himself working with the band. This is a story not about rock music but about rock "life", an inside look at a corrupt multi-billion dollar industry in all its tawdry, self-deluding glory.
