Review

Uncut (p.109) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "If you're a fan of music that sounds like driving into the heart of a hurricane without a seatbelt, you'll love this."
Alternative Press (p.133) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On PARALYZED, Witch combine the occasional pass at Pentagram's classic reverb ring with massive doses of bleary stoned-drone..."

Title Note

If Witch's debut had an element of knowing humor, this second outing, PARALYZED, finds them becoming a more fully realized band in spite of themselves. Clearly, a year of serious touring between recordings has lent an edge and unity to their Blue Cheer revival act. Flipping the conceit of Dinosaur Jr.--who were a punk band embracing classic rock excess--Witch now sound like an early-`70s stoner band going punk. "Eye" and "1000 MPH" have more speed and aggression than anything on the debut. On the latter tune and "Psychotic Rock," vocalist Kyle Thomas even sounds like the ultimate Blue Cheer-fan-gone-punk: Mudhoney's Mark Arm. Bassist Dave Sweetapple and moonlighting drummer J. Mascis help to live down any suggestion that Witch is not a serious gig, giving the album a newfound tightness and an orbit-shifting heaviness.
