If a regional Mexican compilation has a lot of song titles that use the word "madre" (which means "mother" in both Spanish and Italian), chances are that it is either a Catholic-themed compilation paying tribute to the Virgin Mary or a secular compilation paying tribute to biological moms. PARA TI MADRECITA: 15 SUPER �XITOS ("For You, Mom: 15 Major Hits") falls into the second category. PARA TI MADRECITA is fairly diverse, ranging from the straight-ahead norte¤o of Los Tucanes de Tijuana's "Bonita Se¤ora" and Grupo Exterminador's "Despedida con Mariachi" to the grupero/Latin pop of Los Bukis' "Te Amo, Mama" (which features Marco Antonio Sol¡s during his pre-solo career days), Los Yonic's' "Inolvidable Amor" and Industria del Amor's "Perd¢name, Mama." The compilation moves into Mexican-style cumbia with "Amor de Amores" and "Por el Amor a Mi Madre," two minor-key gems by Los Angeles Azules (the group that singer Charly Bec¡es belonged to before he formed los Angeles de Charly). And Ezequiel Pe¤a's "10 de Mayo" (a tear-jerker from his superb VIVA LA BANDA album of 2003) is pure banda. But whether the style is norte¤o, banda, grupero, or cumbia mexicana, maternal love is the dominant theme of this engaging compilation.
