Mighty Sam McClain is a Louisiana-bred singer who belongs in a unique class--the Southern soul stylist who's never more than two steps from the blues, like Bobby "Blue" Bland, Solomon Burke, James Carr, or Johnny Adams. Southern soul, rich with the music's blues and gospel roots (with the occasional touch of country), with very little pop sweetening: that's Mighty Sam's territory. He has the range and warmth of Otis Redding with some of the gospel-growl of Burke and the blues-feel of Bland and B.B. King.

PAPA TRUE LOVE collects the singles (and a few album tracks) recorded for the Amy label in the mid-'60s. The production is very much in the tradition of Atlantic/Stax-era soul (sharp, restrained guitar licks, horns, high-pitched organ as in Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman"), but the playing has more blues leanings. Throughout, Mighty Sam sings with the right balance of anguished grit and assured polish, all the while avoiding corniness or cheap melodrama. One high point: a sublimely restrained version of "I Who Have Nothing," otherwise known as a big hit for Tom Jones.
