Review

"As good a romantic document in essence as anything by Chateaubriand."

"A work neglected in our time and one which in my opinion deserves our renewed interest...Contains a harmony found only in the highest types of poetry: it is actually poetry set in prose, and most of the best traits of each...."

"The short tale that fills less than two hundred pages unrolls vividly before the eye through the sheer force of the writer's artistic sincerity. The story is largely poetry....Some of the paragraphs are tiny lyrics in themselves."

"It is a lyric in praise of woods and mountains, sustained in high ecstatic mood throughout."

"A strange and beautiful book. It is also a book which requires a good deal from the reader, both of sympathy with its mood, and of a definite type of visualization. The author seems to have shunned drama, as interfering with the lyricism of his story. The pathos, the drama the reader must discern for himself, through the power of his own sympathetic imagination."

Annotation

This pastoral love story takes place in a remote country village in Norway, An army officer on furlough falls in love with a local girl who alternately encourages and spurns him. His obsession is only increased by her moods, and eventually he can think of nothing else. The operatic nature of the tale is reflected in the ornate and exquisitely lyrical prose with which the author tells it. It is one of Hamsun's most famous books and was, from the time of its first publication, one of his most popular as well.
