Title Note

Personnel: William Parker (bass); Daniel Carter (alto & tenor saxophones, flute, clarinet); Hamid Drake (drums).

Recorded at Strobe-Light Studios, New York, New York on April 2, 2000.

A truly beautiful and stimulating album, William Parker's PAINTER'S SPRING is that rare jazz session that melds supreme creativity, technique, intuition, sensuousness, and surprise in perfect balance. Parker is most often associated with the avant garde (he has played bass for Cecil Taylor), and there is certainly a bold, far-reaching quality to these compositions. Yet they are also anchored by swing (note the driving groove on opener "Foundation #1), modal playing that recalls late-period Miles and Coltrane, and many a moment of shimmering, delicate beauty.

Parker's athletic bass-playing finds its perfect complement in the drumming of Hamid Drake, who impresses as both a free-time rhythm-keeper and a colorist of great sensitivity. The trio is rounded out by flautist, clarinetist, and saxophonist Daniel Carter, who helps--with his lovely sense of melody--direct the painterly line of this impressionistic music. The compositions are all penned by Parker, save a Duke Ellington cover and the spiritual "Balm of Gilead," but even the covers ring with this trio's unique, organic, and masterly approach.
